Crash

#

People are born with good hearts, but they grow up and learn prejudices. "Crash" is a movie that brings out bigotry and racial stereotypes. The movie is set in Los Angeles, a city with a cultural mix of every nationality. The story begins when several people are involved in a multi-car accident. From that point, we are taken back to the day before the crash, seeing the lives of several characters, and the problems each encounters during that day. An LAPD cop (Matt Dillon) is trying to get medical help for his father, but he is having problems with a black HMO clerk who won't give his father permission to see another doctor. He in turn takes out his frustration on a black couple during a traffic stop. A socialite (Sandra Bullock) and District Attorney (Brandon Fraser) are carjacked at gunpoint by two black teenagers. Sandra takes out her anger on a Mexican locksmith who is changing the door locks to their home. Later that night, the locksmith is again robbed of his dignity by a Persian store-owner. Many of the characters switch from being bad-person-to-hero in ways that may surprise you. Douglas Young (the-movie-guy) It's a wonderful movie!

Bartleby (B.) Gaines is a fun loving slacker who, unfortunately, gets turned down for every college he applied for, much to the chagrin of his overly expectant parents. So, with a little cutting and pasting, he creates the South Harmon Institute of Technology, and lo and behold, he is accepted (along with his friends Rory, Hands, and Glen, whose college plans were also all but dashed). However, his parents want to see the website, the campus, and the dean. So now he has his other friend Sherman (who has been accepted to the prestigious Harmon College) build a web page, they lease out an abandoned psychiatric hospital, and they hire Sherman's uncle Ben to be the dean. Problem solved? Not quite. The web page was done so well, that hundreds of students show up at the front door, all of which were turned down by other colleges. Faced with no choice, Bartleby decides to proceed with turning South Harmon into a real college, and sets about figuring out what to teach and how to teach it. Meanwhile at Harmon, dean Van Horne meets with Hoyt Ambrose, a rich law student and head of the KBE fraternity (which Sherman is trying to become a member of), to discuss building a gateway for Harmon using land presently being used by South Harmon. He tries finding the leaseholder of the land, to no avail. Meanwhile, his girlfriend, Monica, catches him cheating on her, and a big party at South Harmon lures a chunk of Harmon's students away, including Monica into the arms of Bartleby. Now Hoyt uses Sherman, knowing he has been bouncing between the two schools, in an attempt to bring South Harmon down for good. However, Bartleby has an accreditation appointment with the state Board of Education to prove South Harmon's worthiness. Can he legally bring the South Harmon Institute of Technology to life and win the love of Monica?

In the Battle of Thermopylae of 480 BC an alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian army in the mountain pass of Thermopylae. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held back the enemy in one of the most famous last stands of history. Persian King Xerxes lead a Army of well over 100,000 (Persian king Xerxes before war has about 170,000 army) men to Greece and was confronted by 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians and other Slave soldiers. Xerxes waited for 10 days for King Leonidas to surrender or withdraw left with no options he moved. The battle lasted for about 3 days and after which all 300 Spartans were killed. The Spartan defeat was not the one expected, as a local shepherd, named Ephialtes, defected to the Persians and informed Xerxes of a separate path through Thermopylae, which the Persians could use to outflank the Greeks.

The Final Destination 2009

#

At McKinley Speedway, race fans are gathered in the stands to watch as cars speed around the track. Some are even hoping for a crash. Nick O'Bannon (Bobby Campo) joins his friends, Hunt Wynorski (Nick Zano), Janet Cunningham (Haley Webb), and his girlfriend, Lori Milligan (Shantel VanSanten), with hot dogs and drinks in his hands. They are sitting in section 180. As he sits down, the bench almost snaps in half. Hunt offers the group a drink from his binoculars, which is just a cleverly-shaped canister. Lori asks him if that's straight-up Jack, but Hunt says it his buddy, Jim. Down a couple of rows, Bobby sees Samantha (Krista Allen), a wife and mother of two, tell her boys to put tampons in their ears to block out the noise. A cowboy (Jackson Walker) sits down in front of Nick and Lori, blocking their view. They ask him to move down. A mechanic, Charlie Kewzer (Andrew Fiscella), and his girlfriend, Nadia (Stephanie Honore), are sitting together a few rows down. Nadia says she can't see because of two people standing up. Charlie yells, "Down in front, a**hole!" A racist, Carson (Justin Welborn) and his wife (Lara Grice) see a black security guard named George (Mykelti Williamson) and Carson starts whistling Dixieland. George asks Carson to put his feet down. At the pit stop, wind knocks over a canister of motor oil and that spills down in the front of the tires of one of the cars. As the car speeds off, it dangerously slips on the motor oil, but regains control. Soon, a silver car pulls up and as the crew is filling it up, one guy leaves a sharp tool in a hole in the back of the car. One of the crew yells ,"Go! Go!" when everybody else isn't done, but the car speeds off. The tool in the back of the car drops onto the track shortly after. After a lap, a black car with flames printed on the sides runs over the tool, bursting one of the tires. The car soon starts doing cartwheels, sending two of the tires flying. Everyone in the stands jumps to their feet in eagerness as one the tires flies and hits Nadia in the head, decapitating her. Everyone sees this and runs to the exit in panic. Carson and his wife watch as one of the cars skids out of control, and they turn to run. The car explodes, sending the hood into the stands, slicing Carson and his wife in half. Stephanie and her husband and her kids try to get out. The husband takes the boys outside to safety, but Stephanie is left behind. She trips on the stairs leading to the exit, and people step and trip on her as she is on the ground. She turns over on the stairs with teeth missing and her mouth full of blood. Suddenly, an engine flies and slams her in the stomach, killing her. As people step on the bench Nick and his friends were sitting on, it breaks in many places. A piece of wood from the bench sticks up as people step on it, with a sharp point sticking straight up in the air. Charlie is staring at the headless body of Nadia when he sees an explosion. He decides to get out of there when he trips backwards and falls on the sharp point of the bench sticking up, as it impales him in the back of his head and out of his mouth. As Nick and Lori try to get out of the crowded exit, George calls to them and says that there is an exit on the other side as well. Nick and Lori run over to George and call for Hunt and Janet. As Hunt and Janet try to run over to the others, pieces of the stands above them start falling. One of the stands above collapse on Hunt and Janet. Nick and Lori see this, and run to the other exit with George. The cowboy is separated from everybody else when a flaming car is sent flying into the stands and flies into him, taking out a support beam. Nick, Lori and George get separated and Nick is one side of the exit and Lori and George is on the other, with a crowd of people trying to squeeze into the exit. A collapse takes out the people trying to get out. Lori looks at Nick helplessly as the car on the stands explodes, with the flames engulfing George and Lori. The blast sends Nick backwards into a piece of rebar, impaling him in the heart. Nick emerges from his premonition as he squeezes Lori's thigh in a tight grip. She asks what's wrong. Hunt offers the group his canister. Lori asks if that's straight up Jack. Nick says it's his buddy, Jim. He points out that a cowboy sits in front of him, as the cowboy comes to sit down. Nick tells them that Stephanie is going to make her boys put tampons in their ears. He struggles to remember what Charlie had said to the people in front. He mumbles "Down in front, a**hole." as Charlie yells the same sentence. He hears Carson whistle Dixieland and George tells him to put his feet down. Nick panics and says they have to get out of there, and starts to struggle. He falls on Charlie and Charlie takes off his jacket to fight him. Stephanie's sons get scared and run off and she and her husband follow. George pulls Nick up and Nick accidentally knocks Carson's beer all over his shirt. Carson runs after the group and tells his wife to stay in the stands. Nick, Lori, Janet, Hunt, George, Charlie, Nadia, Carson are all gathered outside the exit. Stephanie ran off after her kids with her husband. Nick says there is going to be a crash. Suddenly, the cars crash and everyone starts to run out of the exits. Carson tries to go back inside for his wife, but George won't let him. Nadia screams at everyone as a tire flies over the speedway and slams into her, decapitating her. Later at a coffee shop called Death By Caffeine, Nick, Hunt, Lori, and Janet are all sitting around a table inside. They see on the news that there will be a memorial held the following night for the victims. Nick and Lori decide to go. The next night at the memorial, Stephanie and her husband meet with Nick and Lori and thank them. George introduces himself to them and as they talk, Carson accuses George of killing his wife since he didn't let him go in after her. He then calls George the "N" word and tells him that his time is coming. Later that night, Nick has a nightmare of a red door, a hook, a cross, a horseshoe, and flames. George is at home, reading an Alcoholics Anonymous book when his mom calls. Carson pulls his tow truck up to George's house. He's drunk and is listening to hard rock on the radio. There is a metal horseshoe hanging off of his rear view mirror. He sees the lights go out in George's house and turns his radio off, but keeps the car on. He goes to the back of the truck and pulls out a huge cross and a shovel. As he does so, he accidentally lowers the hook on the back till it reaches the ground. A can of gasoline gets knocked over and spills on the hook's chain. As Carson goes over to George's lawn to start shoveling, the wind knocks the horseshoe off of the mirror and as it falls, it hits the radio, turning it on, and lands on the gas pedal, pushing the truck forward. The song "Why can't We Be Friends" starts blasting inside Carson's truck, and as he runs over to it, the doors lock. He runs to the back of the truck as it's still moving. The hook gets caught on the bottom of his pants and starts to drag him on the street. The chain dragging on the street causes the sparks to ignite the gasoline, setting Carson on fire. As he is being dragged, George comes out of his house and sees the tow truck dragging Carson. The truck explodes, and Carson's head lands at George's feet. The next morning, Janet calls Lori and tells her to turn on the news. Lori sees that Carson is dead and tells Nick. Nick has another vision of scissors, an eye, a straightener, and a ceiling fan. He says he doesn't know who's going to die next. Stephanie pulls up to a hair salon, and her two sons get out of the car in soccer uniforms. One son bets his brother he can't hit a sign with a rock so they start throwing stones at the sign. One stone lands in the grass a guy is about to start mowing. When one of them hit the sign, the guy yells at them. Stephanie tells them to go play video games down the street at the arcade and she enters the salon. She convinces the receptionist to give her an appointment with someone else after they close since her hair dresser isn't there. A hair dresser named Dee Dee (Cecile Monteyne) sets her up and as she raises the chair it falls back down. Stephanie gets startled, but Dee Dee reassures her. As Stephanie is getting her hair cut, the ceiling fan above is dangerously shaking as it spins. The receptionist lays her broom up along a shelf of hair products. It knocks a bottle of shampoo down onto the spout of a bottle of body butter, releasing some body butter onto the floor. The chair is creaking, and it is about to fall down again. Stephanie asks Dee Dee for some water. The receptionist comes to check on her. Stephanie puts her water down on the counter in front of her. The condensation of the cup drips and a bottle of hairspray slowly slips on the water toward the middle of the two hot plates of a hair straightener. The ceiling fan is coming apart as the hairspray is coming closer to the straightener. It slides in between the hot plates and starts to heat up. The bottle of hairspray is starting to turn brown due to the heat. Dee Dee is cutting very close to Stephanie's eye. Stephanie's sons run in with slurpees and slip on the body butter. Dee Dee stops and Stephanie asks if they're okay. Suddenly, the heat from the straightener burns through the can of hairspray and it bursts. Stephanie screams as the hairspray is launched at the ceiling fan and the fan falls right in front of her, nearly hitting her. A few minutes later, she pays the receptionist and when she opens the door, she tells the boys she's got her eye on them. As she turns to leave, the gardener mows over the stone her son threw and it is launched right into her eye socket. Blood flies through the back of her head and the receptionist and the boys start screaming as she falls dead. Later, Nick shows Lori, Hunt, and Janet that Stephanie died in an article. Nick tells them he knows how the next person is going to die and Lori shows them that they googled similar occurrences and shows them articles of the of 180 disasters. Hunt doesn't care, but Janet gets freaked out and leaves. Hunt says he's going to get laid and leaves. That night, Nick and Lori go back to the stands at the racetrack to remember the order of who died in his premonition. George catches them and takes them to the security office. He shows them the videos from the day of the accident and Nick remembers that Charlie dies next, then George, then Lori, then himself. Nick gets another vision of a car, a CO2 canister and other things. The next day, Nick, Lori, and George go to Charlie's workplace, where he is working on a car. Lori jumps and screams when flames erupt from a motorcycle's exhaust pipe for a cool effect, and accidentally hits a switch, which causes an angled platform to drop a short bit. Charlie rolls out from underneath the car and asks them why they're there, but his boss tells him to take them outside. As they go outside, one of the workers places a can filled with tobacco spit on a table and works on a car. As he is working the table shakes from the force, and the can spills on the wires of the metal spool holding Charlie's car in place with wrapped up cable on the angled platform. Charlie talks to them with a steel grate fence separating them. Charlie tells them he's trying to get his life back together since Nadia died. George tells him that he has been too since he got into an accident with his wife and daughter in the car when he was drunk. Nick says he's getting a bad feeling about something, when the wires of the metal spool short and the spool holding the cable is released. The car rolls down of the platform as George yells, "Look out!" The car almost crushes Charlie, but the cable on the spool runs out and stops the car from going further. Charlie comes out from behind the car, safe, and says that it's not his time to die. Suddenly, the weight of the car put the entire spool out of place and the spool flies and hits the top of a CO2 canister. As George turns to leave, the top of the canister is released and it flies. It hits George and pushes him into the air towards the fence. It forces his torso through the sections of the fence and his body falls apart. Nick and Lori are sitting at a bench nearby the car shop and George joins them. Lori asks Nick who died first, Hunt or Janet. Nick says they died at the same time. They decide to split up; Nick will go after Hunt, and Lori and George will go after Janet. Nick is in his car when he notices an elegant sign next to his car that reads "Clear Rivers Water". Clear Rivers (Ali Larter) was also the name of a girl who survived the flight 180 crash. When he sees the word water, he gets a vision of a coin falling in the water, some wires shorting, a soapy windshield, and a pipe bursting. He calls Hunt and leaves him a message telling him to stay away from water. At a pool, which is right next to a golf course, Hunt is having sex with a girl inside a cabana. He finishes, but she doesn't so she gets mad and leaves. He walks around the pool and sees he has 3 new messages on his phone. The moment before he is about to check them, a fat, bratty kid on an inflatable raft in the pool shoots Hunt in the ear with a water gun. Hunt tells him to give him the gun, but the kid refuses. Hunt deflates the kid's raft with his toothpick and pushes the kid in the water. He takes the gun and stashes behind a fence. He realizes the kid screwed up his phone with the water and it won't work. The gun behind the fence falls and hits a switch labeled "Drain Pool: On". The pool starts to drain. Meanwhile, Janet leaves the drycleaners and gives a homeless man some change. As she walks to her car, the homeless man throws a penny she gave him at some birds. As they fly off, one of them poops on her windshield. As she drives to a carwash, her sunroof starts to act up, opening and refusing to close. At the entrance of the car wash, she doesn't notice a sign reading "Put antenna down" and goes into the car wash after she finally closes her sunroof. As the windshield gets soaped up, the spinning flaps start bending the antenna until it snaps and is sent flying into some wires. The wires get messed up, and Janet's car stops moving. Her sunroof starts to open again and a pipe bursts from above, filling her car up with water. She screams as she tries breaking her window, but is unsuccessful. At the pool, Hunt is flipping his lucky coin on his knuckles as he sits on a pool chair. A golfer hits a ball which accidentally hits Hunt's drink out of his hand. He inadvertently drops his coin and it rolls to the pool and falls in. Hunt walks over to the pool and dives in after it. He doesn't notice the drain underneath him and it suck him to the bottom of the pool. He tries to stand up, but the suction is increasing since he his backing up the drain with his butt. The suction starts getting greater and greater as Nick pulls up to the pool. In the carwash, Janet forces her sunroof open enough to fit her head in and her neck becomes trapped. As she is coming closer and closer to flaps that spinning rapidly out of control, George and Lori enter the carwash through the exit and George pushes Janet's car back with his own car. Lori gets out and frees Janet's neck by pushing the sunroof back with her foot. She helps Janet out of the car as a pipe from above falls and breaks the windshield, draining the car. At the pool, Nick looks for Hunt. An enclosure showing the suction pressure with pipes leading to the ground to the pool starts steaming and shaking because of the backed up drain. The pressure is at the maximum when Hunt's bones suddenly get broken inward and he gets disemboweled. Blood and intestines rush up to the enclosure and explode through the top. Hunt's lucky coin lands among his bowels. Outside the carwash, George says that he's next, but he's made peace with it. He's ready to join his family. At home, Nick and Lori are safe-proofing their apartment by covering sharp knives and such. Lori doesn't get why George is ready to die. Nick sits down next to her on the couch to comfort her. Suddenly, a cup of coffee on the coffee table spills all over a newspaper, spelling out the message, "THROUGH ACTION, THEY WERE SAVED". Nick thinks that maybe they don't have to die. The two rush over to George's house and go into his room. They see he is trying to hang himself. They try to save him, but he doesn't want them to. Suddenly, the rope breaks and he falls. He confesses that he's been trying to kill himself all day. He took a bunch of painkillers, but he threw them all up. He stuck his hose up his car's exhaust pipe, but the car kept stalling. They come up with the conclusion that they broke the chain and cheated death. They go downstairs to celebrate with sparkling cider and cookies. Some number of days later, Nick is packing for his and Lori's trip to Amsterdam. He and Lori are talking on the phone to each other. Lori says that she and Janet are seeing a movie at the mall called "Love Lays Dying". Nick accidentally knocks the remote over and the TV turns on to the news. They state that there is a survivor from the crash, the cowboy. Nick has another vision of ambulance lights, a faucet, the universal sign for hospitals, and blood splattering. Nick rushes over to the hospital to meet George there. At the hospital, a war veteran is about to be given a bath. The attending turns on the tub on when a nurse enters and says she need him in another room. The attending leaves without turn the faucet off. Water starts to drip everywhere. In the room directly beneath the war veteran and the tub, The cowboy wakes up when he feels water dripping everywhere. He tries to call the nurse, but water seeps into the call button and shocks him. He manages to get on the ground and crawl away from his bed. Nick and George enter and see him on the ground as soon as the tube from above falls through floor and smashes him flat. As they're leaving, Nick and George walk across the street when a speeding ambulance hits and kills George. He was next after the cowboy. On the ambulance, Nick sees the universal sign for hospitals. He rushes over to the mall. When he stops in front of the mall, he gets a vision fire, screws, spinning belts, and an exploding theater. He rushes inside. Inside, construction workers leave from working in a room on the other side of the theater Janet and Lori is in. A man leaves his glasses on the table. The sun shines through his glasses and onto a nearby pile of sawdust. The wind blows some tarp onto a fan, accidentally turning it on. The fan blows a table with gas, oil, etc. towards barrels that say "Spontaneously Combustible". One of the bottles falls on a barrel and leaks over to the sawdust. Nick reaches Lori and Janet's theater just in time. Lori goes with Nick, but Janet refuses. Nick and Lori turn the corner as the fire ignites the barrels the theater blows up killing many people. The go back in the theater and see Janet, with a long piece of debris sticking out of her as she's coughing up blood. Nick and Lori leave as the explosions get bigger and the mall is falling apart. They're running down the escalator when a pillar falls and breaks the steps. Nick is hanging onto Lori as the escalator moves closer to the spinning belts down below. Lori's leg gets caught and snapped backward. She starts coughing up blood as the belts take the rest of her body and her blood gets splattered over Nick's face. Nick emerges from another premonition as him and George are walking across the street. He yells, "Look Out!", but it is too late as the ambulance rams George. He rushes over to the mall and goes into the construction room. He sees the fire and grabs an extinguisher and blows out the majority of it. The extinguisher runs out, so as he putting out the sawdust fire, a small piece of hot sawdust floats over to a pile of wood and sawdust and erupt in flames. Nick goes over to it as a table breaks with a nail gun on it. The nail gun points at him and fires a few rounds into his arm, pinning him against the wall. A bottle of oil falls next to the fire and leaks over to more "Spontaneously Combustible" barrels. Nick manages to grab a piece of long wood and wave it around a sprinkler on the ceiling as the oil ignites leading to the barrels, catching them on fire. The sprinkler turn on at the last second. TWO WEEKS LATER Nick is walking down the street when he asks a construction worker if the platform is supposed to be screwed tighter. The worker agrees and says that he'll get someone right on that. Nick walks across the street to Death By Caffeine to meet with Lori and Janet. They sit down with their drinks and as Janet and Lori are talking, he notices signs. There is a brochure for the pool Hunt died at. On the back of a magazine, there is an ad for Love Lays Dying. On TV, they're showing a race. He asks Janet and Lori what if the coffee shop was where they were meant to be. Suddenly outside, the construction platform falls, forcing a truck to swerve around it. It crashes into the coffee shop killing Janet, Lori, then Nick.

9 (2009)

#

9 takes place in a world parallel to our own, in which the very legacy of humanity is threatened. A group of sapient rag dolls, living a post-apocalyptic existence find one of their own, 9 (Elijah Wood), who displays leadership qualities that may help them to survive. The conflicted, but resilient group includes 1 (Christopher Plummer), a domineering war veteran; 2 (Martin Landau), an aged inventor; 5 (John C. Reilly), a stalwart mechanic; 6 (Crispin Glover), a visionary and artist; and 7 (Jennifer Connelly), a brave warrior. There are at least several malevolent creatures up against this group; namely, the cat-skulled creature from the short film, a split-headed flying being that resembles both a bat and a manta ray in wing shape, and an insectoid creature with jointed legs and a pod-like body. -cambaprecoz

Shane Acker's new post-apocalyptic animated adventure 9 began its life as the young director's thesis project during his grad school days in UCLA's animation department. In that original incarnation, the film was an 11-minute silent short that plunged viewers into a desolate, destroyed world inhabited only by diminutive rag dolls loosely stitched together out of whatever odds and ends survived the unseen cataclysm. The short's striking visuals more than made up for its slendersome might say, inscrutableplot. Synthesizing elements from Eastern European animation, Japanese anime and such live-action visions of the apocalypse as James Cameron's Terminator films, Acker created his own distinct futurescape that won the applause of audiences, several awards (including a 2005 Oscar nomination for Best Animated Short) and, best of all, the attention of A-list movers-and-shakers like Tim Burton, who set him up with the funds to turn his short into a full-length feature. Wisely adhering to that old maxim If it ain't broke, don't fix it, Acker uses this opportunity to expand the scope of the original short without fundamentally altering his vision to appeal to a broad mainstream audience. His only major marketplace concession was giving his characters voices, a decision that, while understandable, also turns out to be the film's most significant creative misstep. Clocking in at a swift 80 minutes, 9 unfolds almost in real time at a breakneck pace. As in the short, viewers experience events through the eyes of the title character (voiced by Elijah Wood), one of nine dolls whose origins are shrouded in mystery. The movie begins with 9 gaining consciousness in a dilapidated room in a bombed-out building inhabited only by a long-dead body. Venturing outdoors, he crosses paths with another one of his kind, who escorts him to a carefully hidden bunker where the surviving dolls live, making sure to avoid the mechanical creatures that roam the ruins hunting down any remaining signs of life.

Twilight

Seventeen year old Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) has decided to leave sunny Phoenix to spend some time with her father Charlie Swan (Billy Burke) and minor league baseball-playing stepfather Phil Dwyer (Matt Bushell) can go on the road together for spring training and perhaps even move to Jacksonville, Florida. Bella's relationship with her father is cool, even though she hasn't seen him in several years. When she arrives in Forks, he surprises her with the gift of a red pickup truck that he purchased from his best friend Billy Black (Gil Birmingham). Bella remembers making mudpies with Billy's son Jacob (Taylor Lautner) and looks forward to having at least one friend at Forks High School, until Jacob reminds her that he is a Quileute Indian and goes to school on the Reservation. Not to worry. On her first day of school, Bella is befriended by Eric Yorkie (Justin Chon), the school's "eyes and ears", and he introduces her to some of the other students. Everything is looking cool so far.

Cool, that is, until she meets Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). Edward is one of five foster kids adopted by Dr Carlisle Cullen (Peter Facinelli) and his wife Esme (Elizabeth Reaser). There's also Alice (Ashley Greene) and Emmett (Kellan Lutz) Cullen and the twins, Rosalie (Nikki Reed) and Jasper (Jackson Rathbone) Hale. From the moment Edward lays eyes on Bella, he can't stop scowling at her. When Bella is assigned as Edward's lab partner in Biology class and he storms out the door when the bell rings, Bella is puzzled as to what she could have done to anger him. When she overhears him in the office attempting to transfer out of Biology, she decides to confront him and ask him what is his problem. However, she doesn't get the chance because Edward is absent for the next several days. When Edward does return to school, he seems changed. He introduces himself to Bella and asks her about herself, her family, and whether or not she likes the cold, rainy climate in Forks. Later that day, as Bella is about to get into her truck, another car careens out of control in the school parking lot. Within seconds, Edward has crossed the lot, pulled Bella out of the way, and seemingly stopped the car with his bare hand, leaving Bella more puzzled than before. When she tries to ask Edward how he did it, he simply chalks it up to an "adrenalin rush" and refuses to talk about it. Further, he says that they probably shouldn't even be friends.

That doesn't stop Bella from asking Edward to be her date when the kids decide to go surfing at La Push Beach on the Indian Reservation, but Edward doesn't show. When the kids are joined on the beach by Jacob Black and two of his friends from the Reservation and they learn that Edward Cullen was supposed to be Bella's date, one of Jacob's friends remarks, "The Cullens don't come here." Later, Bella asks Jacob what was meant by that remark, and Jacob tells her of a Quileute legend that says the Quileutes were descended from wolves whereas the Cullens were descended from an enemy clan. The legend also goes that the Quileutes and the Cullens made a pact that required the Cullens to stay off Quileute land in exchange for the Quileutes keeping it secret what the Cullens really were. Bella googles Quileute legends and notices that there is a bookstore in Port Angeles that sells several books on Quileute legends, so she goes along with her new friends, Jessica Stanley (Anna Kendrick) and Angela Weber (Christian Serratos), when they decide to go shopping in Port Angeles for their prom dresses.

After purchasing her books, Bella heads to the restaurant where she planned to meet Jessica and Angela for dinner before heading back to Forks. Along the way, however, she is stopped by four guys with no good on their minds. Suddenly, Edward drives up, forces the guys to back off, and orders Bella to get into the car. When Edward and Bella finally join Jessica and Angela, the girls have already eaten. Edward offers to see that Bella gets some dinner and then to drive her back to Forks, so Jessica and Angela take off, giving Bella and Edward a chance to talk privately. Edward reveals that he was following Bella because he has developed very protective feelings towards her. He also lets it slip that he could read what was in the minds of those low-lives and that he can read just about anyone's mind...except for hers.

On the drive back to Forks, Bella accidentally touches Edward's hand and is amazed at how cold it is. As they pass the Forks Police Department, they see several police cars, including that of Bella's father, with their lights flashing. Dr Cullen's car is also there, so Bella and Edward stop to see what's happening. They learn from Carlisle that the body of Waylon Forge, a good friend of her father, was just found lying in a boat, dead from what looks like an animal attack, this being the second animal attack to happen near Forks. Later, after Bella has returned home with her father, she starts paging through the books she purchased and comes across a Quileute legend about "The Cold One". Googling it, she learns that "The Cold One", aka Apotamkin, is a fanged creature, described as undead, immortal, possessing incredible speed, strength, and cold skin. It is said to drink human blood and variously equated with other legends about vampires.

The next day, Bella confronts Edward with her findings. He doesn't deny it. He takes her to the top of a mountain, out of the cloud bank, and shows her how a vampire's skin sparkles in the sunlight. He explains how the Cullen family has learned to live on animal blood and consider themselves "vegetarian vampires". Still, I am a killer, he says, and admits that he's never wanted a human's blood as much as he wants hers. I don't care, Bella replies. Edward goes on to explain that Carlisle turned him in 1918 when he was dying of Spanish influenza and that Waylon was killed by some other vampires...not the Cullens. The relationship between Bella and Edward progresses to the point where Edward decides to take Bella home to meet his family. All of the Cullens are super-welcoming to Bella...all except for Rosalie, who is concerned that the relationship between Edward and Bella may end badly (i.e., Edward will end up harming Bella), implicating the entire family and forcing them to move again. However, Edward is super careful not to lose control when he's around Bella, and the relationship continues to grow.

One rainy afternoon, Edward takes Bella out to play baseball with his family. In the middle of the game, three figures come walking out of the mist. Fearfully, the Cullens regroup, hiding Bella behind him. The intruders are the rogue vampires who have been feasting on humans, including Waylon Forge. They introduce themselves as Laurent (Edi Gathegi), Victoria (Rachelle Lefevre), and James (Cam Gigandet) and ask whether they can join the Cullens for a game. Carlisle warily agrees, and everyone moves back into the field to take their places. Suddenly, James sniffs the air and realizes that there is a human in their midst. "You brought a snack," he sneers and heads toward Bella. Edward jumps between them. Laurent backs off and agrees to leave, taking James and Victoria with him. "Get Bella out of here," Carlisle warns Edward. As they quickly drive away, Edward explains to Bella that James is a tracker. Now that he's got her scent, he won't give up until he has her. Bella's only salvation is if they can get to James first, rip him apart, and burn the pieces.

Edward's plan is to catch a ferry to Vancouver, but Bella insists on going home first, against Edward's better judgement. They plan a ruse to get Bella quickly in and out of the house without her father knowing what's happening. When Bella gets home, she runs into the house and slams the front door, shouting, "It's over!" at Edward. She then informs her dad that she's got to get away from here...now! She packs a nightbag and, against her father's protests, gets in the truck (where Edward is waiting), and they drive away. Unfortunately, James has already tracked Bella to Charlie's house and is on to their trail. First they stop at the Cullens' house, where they are surprised that Laurent has shown up to warn them about James and Victoria. The plan now is for Alice and Jasper to drive Bella south, while the others, including Rosalie and Esme dressed in Bella's clothes, attempt to create a false trail through the woods. It doesn't take long, however, for James to realize that he's been duped.

When James changes his course, Alice senses the change and has a vision of James heading to a ballet studio in Phoenix where Bella once took lessons. While Jasper and Alice check them into a hotel in Phoenix, Bella gets a call on her cellphone from her mother, frantically worried about her. Suddenly, James comes on the line and informs Bella that he got her Phoenix address from Forks High School and arrived there just as her worried mom also got there. If Bella wants to save Renée's life, she must ditch Jasper and Alice and meet James in her old ballet studio. Bella takes a taxi to the studio but, when she gets there, she finds that it was a trick. James got an old movie from her house, and it was only Renée's voice Bella was hearing. James then taunts her further by threatening to film their "time together" in order to break Edward's heart.

As the camera rolls, James bats Bella around the room, then breaks her leg. Suddenly, Edward shows up, having gotten there faster than the others because of his greater speed. With their vampire strength, James and Edward toss each other around the room, breaking mirrors and windows with the impact of their bodies. At one point, James manages to swoop down in Bella and bite her arm. Just then, Carlisle, Alice, Emmett, and Jasper show up. Alice races to Bella's side, while Carlisle pulls Edward off James, telling him that Bella needs him more. Overpowered by the smell of Bella's blood, Alice asks Carlisle to take over for her. While Carlisle bends over Bella, Alice breaks James' neck, and she, Jasper, and Emmett start a fire to burn his body. Carlisle says that Bella's femoral artery is severed and she's losing a lot of blood...but even more important is the fact that she's been bitten, and the vampire venom has begun to affect you. Edward has a decision to make...either let the change happen or suck out the venom. Edward refuses to allow the change, so he decides to suck out the venom even though it means that he might not be able to stop.

When Bella awakens, she is in the hospital, her mother at her side and Edward asleep in a chair. Bella claims not to remember anything that happened, so Renée tells her how Edward and his dad came down from Forks to persuade her to return, and when Bella went to see them at their hotel, she tripped, fell down two flights of stairs, broke her leg, went through a window, and lost a lot of blood. When Renée leaves to get Charlie, who's waiting in the hospital cafeteria, Edward "wakes up". He tells Bella that they took care of James and that Victoria ran off. Then he lowers the boom. He wants Bella to move to Jacksonville with her mother so that she can't be hurt anymore by her association with him. Bella refuses.

Bella moves back to Forks with her dad. With her leg still in a cast, Bella attends the prom with Edward. When Edward goes off to park the car, Jacob sits down next to Bella. He tells her that his father wants her to break up with Edward and that he sent a warning:."We'll be watching you." Bella laughs. Later, as Bella and Edward dance in the gazebo, she asks him why he didn't let her turn. "If you just let the venom spread," she says, "I could be like you by now." She informs him that she's made the decision to be with him forever and offers him her neck. Edward bends over to bite her neck but ends up simply kissing it. "Is it not enough just to have a long and happy life with me?" he asks. "For now," Bella replies.

From a window overlooking the gazebo, Victoria watches Bella and Edward kiss. She turns away, lets down her hair, and smiles to herself.

The Day The Earth Stood Still

#

In the original movie, a flying saucer orbits Earth, and lands in Washington, DC, on the Mall. Klaatu (Michael Rennie) steps out and is shot by a jumpy soldier. Gort (Lock Martin), an indestructible robot steps out of the spacecraft and proceeds to melt all the weapons, including tanks. Later, the Earth comes to realize that Gort has used very little of his power to make this happen.

While lying on the ground, Klaatu orders Gort to stop, and is then taken by the military to a hospital from which he later escapes in order to learn more about this planet called Earth and its human inhabitants. He meets Helen Benson (Patricia Neal) and her son Billy (Billy Gray); takes Klaatu on a tour of Washington, DC; and finally stops in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Klaatu reads the words uttered by Lincoln many years ago and realizes that there might be hope for Earth.

When they begin to suspect the alien man, he reveals himself, along with the news that Gort is a member of a race of super-robot enforcers invented to keep the peace of the galaxy and will destroy the Earth if provoked. Klaatu is pursued and shot and killed by the military. Before Klaatu dies, he tells Helen to go to Gort, and say the words "Klaatu barada nikto." If she does not, Klaatu tells her Gort will destroy the Earth. Helen makes her way to the ship and finds Gort. As the robot moves towards her, she repeats the phrase over and over. The robot picks her up and takes her into the ship. It then retrieves Klaatu's body and, through their alien science, resurrects Klaatu.

The 2008 remake about an alien and his indestructible robot will star Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, Jennifer Connelly as Helen Benson, Jaden Smith as Jacob, and Kathy Bates. Gort has not been cast at this time and will most likely be created using SFX.

The remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still will supposedly remain true to the original movie. However, there is a chance the remake will more likely remain true to the short story upon which the 1951 movie is based. In either case, the alien weaponry seems to have been upgraded. In addition to a city going dark, and a very brief look at the new Gort, the film trailer shows a cloud of black smoke, capable of rapid movement and disintegrating matter on contact.

In the 1951 movie, Gort is described as one of a race of robots created by the planets to maintain peace throughout the galaxy. If the 2008 remake follows "Farewell to the Master," the short story by Harry Bates upon which the 1951 movie is based will be used for the ending, which will not be revealed here.

The NoteBook

#

In a modern-day nursing home, an elderly man named Duke (James Garner) begins to read a love story from his notebook to a female fellow patient (Gena Rowlands).

The story begins in 1940. At a carnival in Seabrook Island, South Carolina, local country boy Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) sees seventeen-year-old heiress Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) for the first time and is immediately smitten. She continuously refuses his persistent advances until their well-meaning friends lure them together; they then get to know each other on a midnight walk through empty Seabrook.

Noah and Allie spend an idyllic summer together. One night, a week before Allie is to leave town, she and Noah go up to an abandoned house called The Windsor Plantation. Noah tells her that he hopes to buy the house, and Allie makes him promise that the house will be white, with blue shutters, a walk-around porch, and a room that overlooks the creek so she can paint. They intend to make love for the first time, but are interrupted by Noah's friend Fin (Kevin Connolly) with the news that Allie's parents have the police out looking for her. When Allie returns home, her disapproving parents ban her from seeing Noah again. Allie fights with Noah outside and the two decide to break up. Allie immediately regrets the decision but Noah drives away. The next morning, Allie's mother reveals that they are going home that morning. Allie frantically tries to find Noah, but is forced to leave without saying good-bye. The Hamiltons then send Allie to New York, where she begins attending Sarah Lawrence College. Noah, devastated by his separation from Allie, writes her one letter a day for a year, only to get no reply as Allie's mother keeps the letters from her. Noah and Allie have no choice but to move on with their lives. Allie continues to attend school, while Noah and Fin enlist to fight in World War II. Fin is killed in battle.

Allie becomes a nurse for wounded soldiers. There, she meets the wealthy Lon Hammond, Jr. (James Marsden), a well-connected young lawyer who is handsome, sophisticated, charming and comes from old Southern money. The two eventually become engaged, to the joy of Allie's parents, although Allie sees Noah's face when Lon asks her to marry him.

When Noah returns home, he discovers his father has sold their home so that Noah can go ahead and buy The Windsor Plantation. While visiting Charleston to file some paper work, Noah witnesses Allie and Lon kissing at a restaurant, causing Noah to go a little crazy, convincing himself that if he fixes up the house, Allie will come back to him.

While trying on her wedding dress in the 1940s, Allie is startled to read about Noah completing the house in the style section of a Raleigh newspaper and faints. She visits Noah in Seabrook and he invites her to dinner, during which Allie tells Noah about her engagement. Noah questions whether Allie's future husband is a good man and she reassures Noah that he is. Later in the evening, Noah invites Allie to come back tomorrow.

In the present, it is made clear that the elderly woman is Allie suffering from dementia, which has stolen her memories and Duke is her husband. Allie does not recognize their grown children and grandchildren, who beg Duke to come home with them. He insists on staying with Allie.

The next morning, Allie and Noah go rowing on a nearby lake and begin to reminisce about their summer together. As a rain storm starts Noah rows to shore, where Allie demands to know why Noah never wrote to her. After the revelation that Noah had indeed written to Allie, they share a passionate kiss, before making love into the night.

The next day, Allies mother appears on Noahs doorstep, telling Allie that Lon has followed her to Seabrook after Allie's father told him about Noah. Her mother takes Allie out for a drive to show her that there had been a time in her life when she could relate to Allie's present situation. On returning to Noah's, she hands her daughter the bundle of 365 letters that Noah had written to her. When alone, Noah asks Allie what she is going to do; Allie is confused and confesses that she doesnt know. Noah asks her to just stay with him, admitting it is going to be really hard, but he is willing to go through anything because he wants to be with her. Confused as ever, Allie drives off.

Allie drives to the hotel and confesses to Lon, who is angry but admits that he still loves her. He tells her that he does not want to convince his fiancée that she should be with him, but Allie tells him he does not have to, because she already knows she should be with him.

The film goes back to the elderly couple, and Duke asks Allie who she chose. She soon realizes the answer herself; young Allie appears at Noah's doorstep, having left Lon at the hotel and chosen Noah. They embrace in reunion.

Elderly Allie suddenly remembers her past before she and Noah/Duke joyfully spend a brief intimate moment together; after originally finding out about her illness, she had herself written their story in the notebook with the instructions for Noah to "Read this to me, and I'll come back to you." But soon Allie relapses, losing her memories of Noah yet again. She panics, and has to be sedated by the attending physician. This proves to be too difficult for Noah to watch and he breaks down. The next morning, Noah is found unconscious in bed and he is rushed to the hospital; he later returns to the nursing home's intensive care ward. He goes to Allie's room later that night, and Allie remembers again. The next morning, a nurse finds them in bed together, having both died peacefully holding each other's hands. The last scene shows a flock of birds flying away.
